Um trabalho artístico minucioso e demorado,

Resistência à velocidade dos tempos, à não memorização da imagem, à falta de tempo para refletir. Hopeless é uma exposição (pop-up) que nos propõe parar, olhar e sentir — tal como todo o trabalho de João Fortuna, que é também um espelho crítico do presente.
As suas composições são densas e saturadas, revelando o excesso do mundo contemporâneo, onde o ruído é constante e a monitorização social nos molda. Com uma sátira mordaz, João Fortuna expõe a alienação, a necessidade de validação nas redes sociais e a rotina mecânica da vida moderna — ciclos repetitivos onde o tempo se confunde com produção e a existência se reduz à repetição. O seu trabalho é também resistência do olhar: observar, pensar e perceber que a luz que nos ilumina é a mesma que nos cega, num mundo onde a liberdade se confunde com obediência e o humano se aproxima do autómato.
O Open Studio aproxima-nos intimamente do ambiente de criação do artista, reunindo obras originais, esculturas em rotação, edições tridimensionais, provas de artista, instalação e work in progress. Um verdadeiro gabinete de curiosidades, onde livros, ferramentas, memórias e fragmentos de ideias revelam o seu percurso minucioso, paciente e obsessivo.
A Instalação tem uma posição de destaque— um projeto de longa duração iniciado em 2022 — que se apresenta agora no seu segundo momento, após uma primeira apresentação em 2023. Uma obra mutável, em constante reestruturação, incorporando novas camadas e influências que refletem o percurso e as inquietações do artista a cada momento.
Hopeless é a cidade saturada, o excesso de falsas promessas, o colapso silencioso, o vazio e a sobrecarga — uma distopia já instalada, espelho do presente, onde cada superfície, cada peça, cada detalhe nos propõe refletir sobre quem somos, onde estamos e para onde caminhamos.
É um convite a resistir.

In a single word, I summarise the work of João Fortuna.
An artistic practice that is meticulous and slow,
slow,
slow,
slow.
Resistance to the accelerating pace of our times, to the fading memory of the image, to the absence of time for reflection. Hopeless_ is a pop-up exhibition that invites us to pause, to look, and to feel — as does all of João Fortuna’s work, which stands as a critical mirror of the present.
His compositions are dense and saturated, revealing the excesses of the contemporary world, where noise is constant and social monitoring shapes us and silences us. With mordant satire, João Fortuna exposes alienation, the constant need for validation through social media, and the mechanical routine of modern life — repetitive cycles where time becomes production and existence is reduced to repetition. His work is also an act of visual resistance: to observe, to think, and to recognise that the same light which illuminates us can also blind us — in a world where freedom is confused with obedience and the human becomes almost mechanical.
The Open Studio offers an intimate encounter with the artist’s creative environment, presenting original works, rotating sculptures, three-dimensional editions, artist’s proofs, installations and works in progress. It also functions as a cabinet of curiosities, where books, tools, memories and fragments of ideas reveal the artist’s meticulous, patient and obsessive process.
The installation holds a place of prominence — a long-term project begun in 2022 — now presented in its second stage, following an initial showing in 2023. It is a mutable work, in constant transformation, continuously restructured and enriched with new layers and influences that reflect the artist’s evolving path and concerns.
Hopeless_ is the saturated city, the excess of false promises, the silent collapse, the emptiness and overload — a dystopia already in place, a mirror of the present where each surface, each piece, each detail invites us to reflect on who we are, where we stand, and where we are heading.
It is an invitation to resist.
